MINAM reaffirms its support for Sierra del Divisor National Park at the BCA forum

The Sierra del Divisor National Park project, led by Restore and its partner FRONTERRA, was presented by Peru’s Ministry of the Environment at the first BCA forum in 2026

The first meeting of the Biodiversity Credit Alliance (BCA) forum in 2026 was held on January 29, via videoconference at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. CET, in order to accommodate as many interested parties as possible from around the world who are involved in the biodiversity finance ecosystem. The purpose of the day was to provide market participants and policymakers with an overview of how national biodiversity credit frameworks are developed and managed in practice.

During these two sessions, the BCA presented the latest developments in its projects, such as the working groups on the development of biodiversity credits, as well as the International Environmental Guardianship (IEG). The IEG develops environmental projects based on regional partnerships in Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Pacific, and Eastern Europe.

Following these updates, Elvis García Torreblanca, Director of the Directorate General for Environmental Economics and Finance at the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment, took the floor to present the Peruvian government’s progress in developing biodiversity credits. His speech covered several points:

  • an explanation of the political context of biodiversity credits in Peru and the framework of MERESE, the Peruvian ecosystem services compensation mechanism;
  • the development of national guidelines, with the conclusion of a review conducted by the working group formed in 2025 on the various aspects of biodiversity credits sought by MINAM: possible stacking with carbon capture projects, complementarity, and accurate and transparent monitoring, among others;
  • and finally, the link between these efforts and broader national strategies.

To support these remarks, Mr. García Torreblanca also highlighted the Sierra del Divisor National Park project, led by Restore and its partner FRONTERRA, explaining the roles of each party and how the project was set up.

The collaboration with local communities in implementing biodiversity actions, as well as their genuine involvement in the rewards for positive results throughout the PNSD funding, demonstrates their commitment to the project development process. This transparently demonstrates the high integrity of the biodiversity credits that will result.
