Laurent Piermont

In 2008, Laurent founded and led CDC Biodiversité, a subsidiary of the Caisse des Dépôts dedicated to the protection and restoration of biodiversity. For ten years, he managed what would become the leading European operator of ecological compensation. He also joined the executive committee of the Caisse des Dépôts Group from 2012 to 2018.

An agricultural engineer graduated from Montpellier SupAgro, he obtained a PhD in ecology from the University of Grenoble-Alpes.

In 1997, he became the CEO of the Société Forestière de la Caisse des Dépôts, which he led until 2013. Under his leadership, the company became the leading manager of private forests in France. He then founded the European Carbon Fund in 2005, serving as its president until 2013. This fund plays an important role in promoting carbon compensation mechanisms, actively participating in the fight against climate change at the European level.

In addition to these roles, Laurent holds prominent positions in various organizations; he chairs the Scientific Council of Groupama Forêt Assurance and is a member of the board of directors of the Foundation for Nature and Man, created by Nicolas Hulot.

His career is marked by the creation and leadership of pioneering structures in sustainable investment. Graduating in engineering from the École des Ingénieurs de la Ville de Paris, he later enhanced his skills with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from HEC Paris.

His career began in 1997 at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he launched and developed the climate change adaptation consulting activity, anticipating the crucial issues related to the ecological transition. For nearly eight years, he advised companies on implementing solutions to address environmental challenges.

In 2005, Sylvain joined BNP Paribas CIB, where he created and led the structured finance and climate trading division. During this period, he also became an administrator of the European Carbon Fund, holding this role until 2011 and playing a fundamental role in the financial structuring around carbon markets.

In 2011, leveraging his experience, he co-founded the management company Althelia, specializing in green and impact finance. Under his leadership, Althelia managed up to €600 million in assets, investing in projects with significant environmental and social impact. The company was eventually sold in 2020 to the BPCE Group, becoming “Mirova Natural Capital,” a leading player in the sustainable investment sector.

After obtaining his doctorate from the University of Lyon 1, he began his career simultaneously at the University of Orsay and the Rhône-Alpes Conservatory of Natural Spaces, then joined the Noé Association, where he developed the first participatory science observatory “Butterflies and Garden.” In 2007, he was recruited by the Nicolas Hulot Foundation as coordinator for the Oceans, Climate, Biodiversity, and Agriculture programs.

In 2009, he became Biodiversity and Forest Technical Advisor in the office of Jean-Louis Borloo, Minister of State in charge of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and the Sea, preparing, among other things, France’s commitments for the International Year of Biodiversity. He was called by the LPO in September 2010, first as an advisor to Allain Bougrain Dubourg, President of LPO France, and then as Director of External Relations, Communication, and Partnerships. In early 2017, he became Director of Research, Innovation, and Impact Measurement at CDC Biodiversité.

In this role, he oversaw the development of the Biodiversity Economy Mission, consulting and training activities, the Nature 2050 program (raising over €20 million and engaging 82 projects in 6 years), and the Biodiversity Impact Measurement Department, responsible for the Global Biodiversity Score (the first tool to conduct a “biodiversity assessment”). In early 2024, he founded the company TETRAS Innovating for Nature and joined the Printemps des Terres team to work on the creation of RESTORE.

At the same time, he advises the Endowment Fund for Biodiversity, supports its flagship program “Save Your Logo,” and creates the support fund for “Municipal Biodiversity Atlases.” An author of numerous scientific and popular articles, he has also published several books and participated in many documentaries on biodiversity. Since 2017, he has been President of the SOPTOM-Turtle Village association, sitting on the board of directors and commissions of several organizations of public interest (The Explorers Foundation, SSC IUCN, etc.).
