The World Bank report

We just found out about the The World Bank report “Blueprints for Private Investment in Ecosystem Restoration – Lessons from Case Studies”.

Great piece of work and quite spot on. Where we agree :

A wealth of financial models for nature restoration exist, that can (or must) be combined;

Emergence of biodiversity credits, as part of the Kunming-Montreal agreement;

The need to catalytic funding to take activities to the bankable stage.

Where we disagree :

The report indicates that restoration is “technically complex” and points this as a main challenge; we would disagree to this: technical solutions are well documented and used; dissemination of knowledge might be lacking and improved;

Carbon is seen as a great financial stream for restoration; we invite to caution here as we are increasingly seeing restoration projects being “denatured” to fit within a carbon framework. What is needed is a pure biodiversity-based financial instrument, that can finance restoration for itself, at scale.

Congratulations to Olga Gavryliuk, Ben Guillon for the report and Sean DeWitt, Nicholas Moss and Agnes Johan for their insights
